Enhances Services for Pharmaceutical Managed Markets and
Healthcare Payers in the U.S.
Norwalk, CT, December 5, 2007 – IMS Health, the world’s leading provider of market intelligence to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, has acquired MIHS Holdings, Inc. The company’s two subsidiaries – IHS and MedInitiatives – provide the healthcare market with analytics and technology services to streamline and enhance healthcare data management initiatives.
“With the acquisition of MIHS, IMS further strengthens its managed markets services for pharmaceutical clients and expands its value-added capabilities for healthcare payers,” said Bill Nelligan, president, IMS Americas. “This represents a significant growth opportunity for us, as drug manufacturers seek greater efficiencies from their non-core operations and payers look for new ways to manage escalating costs and drive evidence-based healthcare decisions.”
IHS: Strengthens Managed Markets Capabilities for Pharma Clients
IMS provides a range of managed markets services, including core information and analytics to help companies evaluate plan, payer and formulary performance, as well as management consulting capabilities in areas such as managed markets strategy, contracting, pricing and planning. With the acquisition of IHS, IMS adds complementary services and solutions – particularly in validating rebate claims and optimizing contracting performance.
Milwaukee-based IHS helps pharmaceutical companies manage key aspects of their managed markets operations more cost effectively with services that support drug rebate data validation and adjudication of Managed Care, and Medicare Part D contracts. In addition, IHS’s technical solutions help clients better measure and evaluate their effectiveness in this important healthcare delivery channel. IHS’s clients include eight of the top 10 U.S. pharmaceutical companies.
“With 90 percent of U.S. prescriptions paid for by third parties, the opportunity to help pharmaceutical companies run their managed markets operations more efficiently and effectively is significant,” Nelligan said. “No one else but IMS has such a broad base of capabilities to support the entire managed markets process – from setting strategy and contracting to evaluating plan product performance and supporting government compliance.”
MedInitiatives: Expands IMS’s Range of Payer Offerings
In the healthcare payer market, IMS applies its extensive information assets and expertise to assess physician dynamics and drug therapies, helping clients establish an evidence-based approach to healthcare decisions. Through the addition of MedInitiatives, a healthcare analytics company based in Sacramento, Calif., IMS will provide payers and their supporting vendors – primarily pharmacy benefit managers – with additional insights and innovative technology to better manage prescription drug costs. MedInitiatives’ technology is used by some of the nation’s largest healthcare and life sciences companies.
“Like all healthcare stakeholders, payers are looking for efficiencies, and they need the right information to ensure consumers continue to have access to high-quality, affordable healthcare,” noted Nelligan. “By applying our range of capabilities, we can help payers establish evidence-based benchmarks that are analogous to what we provide our pharmaceutical clients.”
